[origin: EP1231357A2] Ladder or stepladder comprises two stringers (10) with telescopic ends (12). The stringers are designed as profiles at least in the lower region and the telescopic ends are inserted inside these profiles. Preferred Features: The profiles have at least two stop openings (14, 15) in the wall for a projection arranged on the telescopic ends. The stop openings are arranged so that the telescopic ends have a first end position in which they do not protrude over a ladder foot (11) arranged at the lower end of the stringer and a second end position in which they overlap the ladder foot by a specified distance.
