[origin: WO0140011A1] The invention relates to a speed controller (50) that controls the driving speed of the vehicle not only starting from a certain minimum speed (v1) but also at speeds below a predetermined limit speed (v2) and until the vehicle stops. The traffic situation can be detected by means of a distance sensor (41). The vehicle can thus start automatically when the driver has reacted to a corresponding starting notice which is effective until a given limited time but, in an alternative embodiment, can be given again. The driver, however, has the possibility to take over control from the speed controller (50) in each traffic situation by actuating the gas or brake pedal.
