[origin: WO0104063A2] Method for manufacturing optical fiber comprises the steps of laying down core and cladding materials to form a soot blank, the soot blank including a glass modifier, loading the unconsolidated soot blank into a draw tower, providing a hot zone to heat a portion of the blank to a temperature sufficient to sinter the soot into molten glass, and directly drawing the molten glass into fiber.
