[origin: WO0104113A2] The present invention relates to a new process for preparing pharmaceutically active compounds and intermediates therefor. The (-) <i>trans</i> isomer of 4-(4'-fluorophenyl)-3-(3'',4''-methylenedioxyphenoxymethyl)piperidine(paroxetine) is an important compound having antidepressant and anti-Parkinson properties. This compound is used in therapy as the hydrochloride salt to treat inter alia depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and panic. There is described herein an improved process for its preparation which avoids several isolation and purification steps required in the prior art.
