In addition to the presupply pump (1), the fuel metering system has a high pressure pump (2), the presupply pump (1) pumping fuel into a low pressure area (LP) of the fuel metering system and the high pressure pump (2) pumping fuel out of the low pressure area (LP) and into a high-pressure area (HD) of the fuel metering system. According to the invention, the presupply pump (1) is controlled in such a way that it is regulated according to the requirements, so that the flow being transported through the presupply pump (1) corresponds approximately to the flow being transported through the high pressure pump (1) and a predetermined pressure is present in the low pressure area (ND), in order to reduce the appearance of cavitation in the high pressure pump (2).
