[origin: WO0163787A1] The invention relates to an external modem (M) that can be used in a simple manner and is provided with components which form a standard modem (SM) for connecting to a data network (DN) which is specialised in transmitting data. Said modem is also provided with components that form a powerline communication modem (PLC-M) for connecting to an energy supply network (EN) which is specialised in supplying electric appliances with electric energy. The modem (M) requires less cables for the connection thereof because the lines of the energy supply network (EN) are used therefor.
