Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0162639A2] Disclosed is a friction wheel separator for separating sheetlike items, especially bank notes, comprising a feed store (5) for receiving a pile of sheetlike items, a separating roller (2) consisting of one or several friction elements (4) which engage with and convey a sheet (1a) that is to be separated from the feed store, and a retaining device (3) which, in association with the separating roller, forms a separating gap (7) through which the sheets to be separated (1a) are successively conveyed from said feed store (5). The retaining device (3) is provided with several friction areas (3a) for engaging with the sheets (1a) that are to be separated from the feed store (5) onwards. The friction elements (4) of the separating roller (2) and the friction areas (3a) of the retaining element (3) are made of the same material. Various friction forces transmitted to the sheet to be separated (1a) by the separating cylinder (2) and the retaining device (3) can be produced in such a way that the area of contact between the friction elements (4) of the separating roller (2) and a sheet to be separated (1a) is substantially larger than the area of contact between the friction areas (3a) of the retaining device (3) and the sheet to be separated (1a). All other areas of contact between the retaining device (3) and/or the separating cylinder (2) and the sheet to be separated have a substantially lower friction value than the friction material of the friction elements (4) of the separating cylinder (2) and the friction areas (3a) of the retaining element (3). According to another specific aspect of the invention, the sheetlike items are placed in the feed store (5) on driven feed rollers (11-14) so that the individual sheets can be fed to the separating gap (7) in a reliable manner, irrespective of the height of the pile of sheets.
