[origin: WO0165211A2] A method for operating a sensor sensitive to a measurable variable comprises the operation of the sensor in a measuring mode in which the sensor is activated so as to be able to generate at the end of a required initiation period a sensor signal that can be related to a calibrated value of the measurable variable. The sensor is deactivated during the initiation period if a signal parameter based on the sensor signal exceeds a protection threshold.
