[origin: WO0146782A2] A method for pre-releasing digital content is disclosed. A release time for the digital content is determined and the digital content is encrypted with an encryption key. The encrypted digital cotent is decryptable by a decryption key corresponding to the encryption key. The encrypted digital content is distributed to at least one content user prior to the release time, and the decryption key for the encrypted digital content is released to the content user at the release time. The content user may then decrypt the encrypted digital content with the released decryption key at or after the release time. The encryption key may be selected from an encryption key database having a plurality of entries, where each entry includes a release time for releasing a piece of digital content, and an encryption key for encrypting the digital content that is to be released at the release time.
