The invention relates to a document, preferably a bank note, provided with an authenticity characteristic, the authenticity characteristic comprising a series of holes (5) and a series of markings (3) of the same order of size as the holes (5), the series (1) of holes (5) and the series (1) of markings (3) together forming one pattern. As a result of the combination of the holes (5) and the markings (3) an authenticity characteristic can be obtained that is hard to forge. <IMAGE>
