Abstract (en)
[origin: WO0168099A1] A method of preventing ischemic and/or reperfusion injury after an ischemic or hemorrhagic episode by administering to a subject an effective amount of a heme oxygenase (HO) inhibitor, e.g., tin mesoporphyrin (SnMP), to ameliorate, reduce or prevent ischemic and post-ischemic reperfusion or hemorrhagic injury. In specific examples, SnMP protected heart tissue from injury due to free iron release from hemoglobin at the site of injury. A method of treating or preventing cardiac arrhythmia is also provided.
