[origin: EP1270825A1] The compensator consists of a tube (50) that is laid in ground subject to movement, having holes (52j) at intervals along its length covered by movable shutters (54j) and sealed chambers (56) that can be inflated selectively by a liquid such as a stabilised cement, synthetic resin or 'super-gel'. The shutters can be in the form of sleeves of an elastic material deformed by the liquid pressure, and each inflatable chamber is sealed by its ends to the tube and has a deformable wall of metal or a synthetic material.
