[origin: GB2363185A] A water trap is suitable for use in a mechanical ventilation circuit. The water trap has an inlet (11) and an outlet (12) in fluid communication. A fluid collection vessel (40) is connected by a valve to, and is releasable from, the rest of the water trap, and is operably linked to the valve such that removal of the fluid collection vessel (40) causes the valve to close. Engagement of the fluid collection vessel (40) with the rest of the water trap causes the valve to open. Preferably the valve comprises a rotatable disc (31) with openings (32,33) which are normally in register with openings (25,26) of a further disc (21). The collection vessel preferably has a bayonet connection with the remainder of the trap. The vessel may be removed by rotation relative to the remainder of the trap which brings openings (32,33) out of register with openings (25,26).
