[origin: EP1275772A2] In a paper-making process the varying topographic definition of a felt water absorption belt (12) is monitored by an optical sensor (14). The image resulting is compared by a computer (16) with historic data and especially corrective action taken which is commensurate with the felt condition. An Independent claim is given for an assembly (10) which monitors the condition of a felt web (12) used in the manufacture of paper or carton. The optical sensor captures an image which is at the normal, and/or is oblique with respect to the felt surface. The captured image is temporarily stored and deleted after comparison to the historic reference images. The felt condition is monitored either continually or intermittently in an online process. The optical sensor is a full-image camera in association with high-power flash directed at a fast-moving felt web. When poor felt web condition is detected, the rectification action includes the application of a pipe vacuum and jets.
