[origin: WO0176422A1] The invention relates to a support device (2) that can be adjusted by means of a motor and is used for the upholstery of a piece of furniture that is used for sitting and/or laying upon, a mattress of a bed for instance. The inventive device is provided with a base body (4) which is provided with at least two support components (10-18) that can be adjusted in relation to one another. The support device (2) is also provided with at least one drive unit (32) which is detachably connected to the base body (4) and is provided with a housing (36) that is provided with at least one recess (50, 52). A rotatably mounted shaft (24, 26) engages with said recess when the drive unit is in the assembly position. Said shaft engages with a support component (14, 18) to be adjusted and can be rotated by means of the drive unit (32). According to the invention, the drive unit (32) is placed on the shaft (24, 26) on the support side in such a way that the housing (36) of the drive unit (32) is essentially arranged between the support components (10-18) and the shaft (24, 26). The inventive support device is essentially lower than conventional support devices.
