[origin: EP1277859A2] An open-end spinning assembly has a fast-operating opening cylinder (17) for a continual fibre feed (1) as surrendered by a spreader (78) rollers (79, 80, 81, 82). Each roller has cross-pieces which engage in detents in the adjacent roller. The gap between the spreader rollers is changed periodically. An increase in the gap between a first and second spreader rollers produces a decrease in the gap between the second and third spreader rollers, and vice versa. Pairs of spreader rollers are mechanically coupled and share a common gap variation drive system. The frequency of gap change is much greater than the speed of roller rotation and is pref. between 8 Hz and 25 Hz. The detents are of trapezoidal cross section.
