Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0183269A2] The invention relates to a side impact protection device for motor vehicles, comprising an unfoldable protection element, especially for the head/thorax area of a passenger.According to the invention, the following is provided: a) a longitudinal traction element (30) which is at least partially joined to the lower region (11) of the unfolded protection element (1, 10) and which extends between at least two points of the motor vehicle, and b) at least one tensing device (41, 42) which is used to tense the traction element (30) between the at least two points when or shortly after the protection element is unfolded. The inventive side impact protection device for motor vehicles ensures that the protection element is tensed in a permanent and efficient manner, thereby providing improved protection of the passenger when a side impact or any kind of overturns occur.
