[origin: EP1282086A2] The device has an optical magnifying element or arrangement of optical elements (6), at least two mutually orthogonal positioning elements (4.4') on a base body (2) forming a boundary for a bank note support (3), at least one light source below the support and a fixing element (5) for bank notes above the support. The optical magnifying element or arrangement is arranged on the fixing element or is integrated into the fixing element. AN Independent claim is also included for a method of checking the validity of bank notes.
