Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0185406A2] The invention relates to a method and to a device for comminuting plastic cartridges, especially empty ink cartridges, for the purpose of their subsequent disposal. According to the inventive method, the cartridge is cut, starting on the open end of the cartridge, along a helical line, the chip produced is chopped or cut into short segments and cutting is terminated shortly above the cartridge bottom. The inventive comminution machine comprises a drive and cutting unit that consists of two drive rolls (7, 9). In one of these drive rolls a circular knife (19) is mounted substantially in the center thereof, which knife engages in a knife groove (17) of the other roll. A cartridge (30) is pushed in at an angle so that the cutting unit cuts into the wall of the cartridge along a helical line and cuts off a continuous chip. The oblique position of the cartridge is forced by an oblique surface (15) and/or by a guiding run-in collar (44). The continuos chip is cut up into short segments by a chip cutting unit that is provided with a chopper (11).
