Support mat underlay has a flat material (10) with multiple spaced support feet (14) depending from the lower face. The flat material has through-going slits (12). The length of each slit is less than their spacing to the opposite side. The slits can be arranged in a mesh over the flat surface. The slits are approximately twenty millimeters long. The width of the list is less than the granule size for the surface covering material.
