[origin: DE10028113A1] Data memory comprises an optically readable and writable information carrier having a polymer film (11) whose refractive index can be changed by heating; and an absorber assigned to the polymer film for absorbing a write beam and locally transferring the heat generated to the polymer film. The absorber is orientated to absorb light with a polarization direction that is matched to the orientation of the absorber. Preferred Features: A layer (12) containing the absorber is arranged on the polymer film. The absorber has colored molecules whose transition dipole moments are orientated in a preferred direction.
