Abstract (en)
[origin: WO0189514A2] The invention relates to a method of treating, and improving survival in, critically ill patients, and the use of certain sterile sedative pharmaceutical compositions for the manufacture of a medicament for improving the survival of such patients; in particular such use of pharmaceutical compositions comprising a free radical scavenging sedative agent (such as propofol) and a metal ion chelating agent (such as edetate) in association with a pharmaceutically-acceptable diluent or carrier, especially such composition comprising an oil-in- water emulsion in which propofol dissolved in a water-immiscible solvent, is emulsified with water and stabilised by means of a surfactant, and which further comprises a metal ion chelating agent (such as disodium edetate).
