[origin: DE10029418A1] The circuit has an excess current trigger (5) that detects the switch current (I) flowing through a switch element (6) and triggers opening of the switch if the switch current fulfills a triggering criterion. A current limiter (7) connected in series with the switch element has a steep current-voltage characteristic for low voltages and a flat characteristic for high voltages.
