Checking device for luminescent security markings placed in or on valuable objects, whereby a UV electro-luminescent semiconductor solid state body (2) and or a infrared electro- luminescent semiconductor solid state body (3) are arranged in a housing so that the emitted radiation excites a security marking. A key (9) is provided for switching the device on an off that has a clearly audible and traceable click when switched on.
