[origin: DE10029714A1] The starter has an electric motor with a voltage supply and controler with power switching electronics, a control device whose control output is connected to the power switching electronics' control input and sensors connected for detecting physical parameters relevant to the motor's starting performance. The control device optimizes the starting characteristic based on the detected parameters within permitted limits of the parameters. The starter has an electric starter motor (3) with a voltage supply (16) and a controler (4). The controler has power switching electronics (6), a control device (5) whose control output is connected to the power switching electronics' control input (9) and sensors (11,12,13,15,20) connected to its inputs for detecting physical parameters relevant to the starting performance of the starter motor. The control device optimizes, especially maximizes, the starting characteristic based on the detected parameters within permitted limits of the parameters.
