Raw drilling dada and information is captured and organized in accordance with an ontology of defined concepts and relationships, and it is organized in a database format. An interface is provided to allow an operator to query the database. Queries are received which relate to a specific drilling situation and a data processing system is used to retrieve from the database relevant or analogous drilling knowledge or experience. The relevant or analogous drilling knowledge or experience is utilized to make drilling decisions.
