[origin: DE10032331C1] To form a mechanical bond (1) between the ends (10,11) of two preferably tubular workpieces (5-7), initially the ends (10,11) are pushed into each other until they are wholly supported against each other, and the edge (27) is bent elastically outwards. At least one edge (27) of one end (11) is bent by force (21) towards the other end (11). The ends (10,11) are locked together in a positive fit. A centering unit (24) ensures that the ends (10,11) of the workpieces (5-7) are in alignment as they are pushed together.
