Um ein Verfahren sowie eine Vorrichtung zur Behandlung von hochkohlenstoffhaltigen Eisen-Schmelzen mit einem Kohlenstoffgehalt größer 2% (2) zur Verringerung oder Entfernung von unerwünschten Begleitelementen, insbesondere von Schwefel, bereitzustellen, das einen hohen metallurgischen Wirkungsgrad bei vertretbarem anlagentechnischem Aufwand bietet, soll die Schmelze (2) einer Vakuumbehandlung unterzogen werden. Die Vorrichtung umfasst hierzu einen mit der Schmelze (2) befüllbaren metallurgischen Behälter (3) mit einem Verschlusselement (5) zum Trennen der Schmelze (2) von der Außenatmosphäre sowie Mittel (6) zum Absenken des auf die Schmelze wirkenden Arbeitsdruckes. <IMAGE>
