[origin: EP1172949A1] A free space optical communication system comprises a first unit (21) having a first transmitter (TX1) and a first receiver (RX1) and a second unit (22) having a second receiver (RX2) corresponding to the first transmitter and a second transmitter (TX2) corresponding to the first receiver, wherein the first and second transmitter and the first and second receiver comprise a reflective optical telescope, and optical fibre positioned in the focal region of the reflective optical telescope, and a positioning unit for moving the optical fibre in the direction of the optical axis of the telescope and within a plane perpendicular thereto. The unit is mounted on a tip-tilt positioning system electronically controlled (gimbal). This system provides an optical tracking function allowing a stable, secure, and high-bandwidth optical communication link. <IMAGE>
