[origin: EP1304449A1] The invention is directed to an Internal combustion engine (1) with rotary valves (2, 3) in axial bores (4, 5) to control opening and closing of transfer ports (6, 7) in a cylinder head or cylinder block (8) for fluid communication between the ports (6, 7) and a combustion chamber (23) of the engine (1). A valve drive shaft (9) is arranged perpendicular to the rotary valves (2, 3), the shaft (9) being provided with helical slots (10) to cooperate with gears (11) fixed to the free ends of the rotary valves (2, 3) for driving the rotary valves (2, 3) in accordance with the operating cycle of the engine (1). <IMAGE>
