[origin: EP1310197A2] The foam mattress (1) has a pair of transverse recesses (2) at the head and the foot end. These contain foam inserts (3) of greater rigidity than the rest of the mattress. The recesses and inserts have a wing-shaped cross-section with the thinner ends pointing towards the center of the mattress. There are transverse channels between the recesses which are divided into two sections (4a, 4b) by central bars (5). The channels contain foam inserts (6) of greater flexibility than the rest of the mattress. The top and bottom of the mattress have recesses (7) between the channels which contain foam inserts (8) of different flexibility.
