[origin: WO0215118A1] In order to be able to automatically identify the location and orientation of a directed structure in a digital image, the invention provides a method in which the digital image is subdivided into preferably interconnected blocks. For each block, at least one texture characteristic is determined, which represents a measure for the structuring of the blocks along predetermined predominant directions, and parameters are determined from these texture characteristics. Said parameters indicate the location and the orientation of a directed structure in the digital image.
