[origin: WO0224491A1] The invention relates to an airbag device (1) comprising a gas generator (5) and an airbag (18) to be accommodated begin at least one cover (31) that can be displaced from a closed position, in which it is integrated into the vehicle's paneling, into an open position, in which it is disposed behind the paneling, when the airbag device (1) is activated by drive means (41). In said open position, the airbag device does not substantially project beyond the vehicle's paneling in the direction of a passenger. The drive means (41) comprise at least one rotating piston (4) that can be rotated in a guide chamber along a rotation path from an initial position into an end position by impinging it with pressurized gas, thereby optionally taking along the cover from the closed position to the open position. The invention further relates to a method for operating an airbag device.
