[origin: WO0232163A2] A mobile communications system is operated in a manner to improve its cpacity under the condition of asymmetric traffic flow. When similar amounts of traffic flow occur in each of downlink and uplink directions, channels in a first frequency band of a wireless spectrum are used to transmit information in the downlink direction from network stations to mobile terminals and channels in a second frequency band are used to transmit information in the uplink direction from mobile terminals to the network stations. Upon occurrence of asymmetric traffic flow as a result of themobile terminals receiving in total more information from than they transmit to the network stations, a division of the wireless spectrum into asymmetric uplink and downlink spectrums is made proportionally to the ratio of total uplink data flow to downlink data flow.
