[origin: DE10052703A1] The invention relates to a monitoring device for the weft thread of a mechanical weaving loom, comprising at least one weft element having a thread clip which can be moved into a thread release position, and a weft thread detector monitoring the movement of the weft thread. Said detector is only activated during an observation interval for each weft, said observation interval ending at least approximately with the release of the inserted weft thread by means of the thread clip. An electrical sensor (S) which responds to the release position of the thread clip by means of a signal (I) representing the end of the observation interval is provided in an opening device (B) arranged in the mechanical weaving loom for the thread clip (G) of the weft element.
