[origin: EP1329283A2] The clamping and grip system has a long stroke movement, in an automatic system to hold and secure workpieces of different dimensions and formats. A control sets the clamping width according to the workpiece size and shape, to control the clamp/grip action. The clamp unit is a hydraulically operated vise (1), with a spindle powered by an electromotor or pneumatically. The workpiece measurements and structure are registered by optical and/or electrical sensors, or they can be scanned on a workpiece data carrier. At least one clamping pad (3) is operated by a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder (4) under the clamping plane.
