[origin: WO0238527A1] The invention relates to a method for producing poly- or monomethylol alkanoic acids of general formula (I), R being the same or different and meaning a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic hydrocarbon with 1 to 22 C-atoms or a methylol group; from the corresponding poly- or monomethylol alkanals of general formula (II), R having the meaning above, by oxidation with hydrogen peroxide. The poly- or monomethylol alkanal of general formula (II) used in the reaction has an overall content of metal ions of groups 3 to 14 of the periodic table of up to 5 ppm. The method is used especially for producing dimethylol allkanoic acids from the corresponding dimethylol alkanals, especially for producing dimethylol butanal or dimethylol propanal.
