[origin: WO0232115A2] There is disclosed a system and method for selecting an area of a video display screen with a standard television remote control unit. The system of the present invention comprises a video area controller that receives viewer instructions from the remote control unit. In response to signals from the remote control unit, the video area controller sends signals to the video display screen to display a border around an area of the video display screen selected by the viewer. The viewer uses the remote control unit to send signals to cause the border to move vertically, to move horizontally, to increase in size, or to decrease in size. After the viewer has adjusted the size and location of the border on the video display screen, the viewer sends a signal from the remote control unit to identify the area within the border as an area selected by the viewer.
