The detected signal (ED), which is not differentiated at all, which is differentiated once or which is differentiated a number of times, is supplied as an alternating signal (SED1, SED2, SED3) to the extreme value detector (DET1, DET2, DET3). This enables, for example, the polarization mode dispersion of a higher order or the chromatic dispersion to be detected and, optionally, compensated for by means of a compensating element (C1, C2, TR).
