[origin: EP1340898A2] The engine operating method involves defining a load/revolution rate region for the engine with preferably lower load and lower revolution rate, determining at least temporarily whether the engine is operating in this region and if this is the case, changing the engine to a lean burn mode. The defined region is up to 1 bar load and up to 2000 revolutions per minute. An Independent claim is also included for a control unit for operating an OTTO engine in accordance with the inventive method.
