[origin: EP1344865A2] Noise is detected at a rotating suction roller, e.g. at a papermaking machine, which has a perforated mantle (13) to carry the web (1) around it and it is divided into a number of adjacent sectors (4,5) in the peripheral direction. At least one sector (4) is at an underpressure with a lower pressure than the ambient levels and which dominates the following sector (5). The noise emission from the roller is measured by a microphone (7,8) and a breach of a given noise threshold triggers an alarm and/or a signal to the operatives and/or the machine control (12) for corrective action.
