[origin: WO02053898A1] An internal combustion engine (10) comprises at least one combustion chamber (12). The engine is operated whereby, during a working cycle, fuel is at least intermittently injected directly into the combustion chamber (12) by means of at least two individual injections. In addition, the combustion air exists in the form of a turbulent flow at least in areas inside the combustion chamber (12). In order to keep the internal combustion engine's (10) susceptibility to knocking at a minimum and, at the same time, to ensure a high degree of efficiency, the invention provides that a turbulent flow is produced in the entire load range of the internal combustion engine (10), and the combustion air is precompressed outside of the combustion chamber (12).
