Abstract (en)

[origin: WO02058513A2] The invention relates to a mattress consisting of latex or foam. The support capacity of said mattress can be adapted to the shape of the body, to support requirements of the body and to the sleeping positions of the user, by means of firmness areas which can vary in terms of resistance and positioning. To this end, transversally extending chambers are incorporated into the centre of the mattress and can be accessed and handled from the outside. The content of said chambers can be selected, which enables the resistance to crushing of the mattress to be influenced at a certain point. Said transversal chambers are situated either on the upper side or the lower side of the mattress, or inside the mattress. In the latter case, the chambers can be accessed by cuts starting in the surface and extending vertically to the respective chamber. The chambers are either empty or filled with segmented strips. The crushing capacity of the mattress varies at given points according to the filling. The material firmness of the mattress at certain points can thus be defined in such a way that the mattress has a high variability in its support capacity.
