Abstract (en)

The invention provides a waveguide coupler optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) in which the grating can be positioned within the coupling region of a wave guide coupler (48) so as to simultaneously provide fully optimised add and drop functions. The invention overcomes the limitations of the prior art half cycle coupler (HCC) OADMs in which add and drop functions cannot be simultaneously optimised by providing a waveguide coupler with two or more half cycles and carefully designing the grating (50) so that add and drop signals incident in opposite directions into the coupling region have effective reflection points (M1,M2) that coincide with different points along the coupling region at which the lowest order even and odd normal modes are j pi /2 out of phase, where j is an odd integer. It is therefore possible to provide a high specification OADM without optical circulators. The invention may find application in point-to-point links and optical networks. <IMAGE> <IMAGE>
