[origin: WO02077947A1] The invention relates to a method for generating traffic information (30) according to which a number of detection sensors (20) generate action data (26), e.g. position data, and communicate at least occasionally with a central unit (21), whereby the individual items of action data (26) are recorded by the central unit (21) and are processed therein to form corresponding traffic information (30). The aim of the invention is to be able to minimize communications costs between the detection sensors (20) and the central unit (21). To this end, the invention provides that: the central unit (21) communicates at least occasionally with an information transmission system (40), e.g. a mobile radio system, having a number of mobile terminals (41), e.g. mobile telephones; an action profile (45) of the mobile terminals (41) is determined by determining an action profile (45), e.g. a position profile, of the mobile terminals (41) from e.g. information, for instance, position information, of the mobile terminals (41), and; the central unit (21) controls the detection sensors (20) in a specific manner based on the action profile (45).
