[origin: EP1371597A1] In an elevator main rope, an outer layer portion is disposed so as to cover an outer circumference of an inner layer portion. The inner layer portion has a plurality of inner layer strands. The outer layer portion has a plurality of outer layer strands. The inner layer strands and the outer layer strands are constructed by twisting together base strands made of synthetic resin fibers. A tensile strength of the outer layer portion is set lower than a tensile strength of the inner layer portion. The inner layer portion has a tensile strength equal to or greater than sixty percent of an overall tensile strength. <IMAGE>
