[origin: WO02072270A1] The invention relates to a device and to a corresponding method for canceling, especially destroying, sheet material, especially bills. The device comprises at least one canceling device (2) to which the sheet material (1) to be canceled is fed and in which the sheet material (1) is canceled, especially destroyed, and from which the canceled sheet material (11) is discharged. The device furthermore comprises at least one control device (7) for monitoring the sheet material (11) being discharged or having been discharged from the canceling device (2). In order to improve the monitoring of the sheet material, especially with a view to malfunctions, at least one monitoring device (6a, 6b) is provided with which the fed sheet material (1) is monitored. The fed sheet material (1) is compared with the sheet material (11) being discharged or having been discharged in an evaluation device (9).
