[origin: WO02079061A1] In order to roll up strips (7) of paper or cardboard into rolls (6), known winding machines comprise two supporting cylinders (2, 3) forming a winding bed in which the rolls (6) are situated during the rolling up process, and to which the strip (7) is supplied from below, through the gap between the two supporting cylinders (2, 3). According to the invention, an additional cylinder (8, 9) which is upwardly pivotable in the direction of the winding bed is respectively arranged externally, next to each supporting cylinder (2, 3). Each additional cylinder (8, 9) extends parallel to the supporting cylinders (2, 3) over the length thereof, and is respectively positioned at the end of the pivoting levers (10, 11) which can be pivoted about an axis parallel to the axis of the supporting cylinders, preferably about the adjacent axis of the supporting cylinders. Part of the pivoting levers (10, 11) radially projects past the respective supporting cylinder (2, 3), the length thereof being shorter than the maximum radius of a finished roll (6).
