Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2374372A] The barrier comprises a barrier element 12 mounted on a supporting element, characterised in that the barrier element is provided with one or more penetrating elements 28 which are designed to penetrate at least part of a vehicle which is driven against the barrier. The penetration means are preferably spikes which barbs, latches or some similar design to prevent the spikes from being withdrawn from the vehicle once inserted. A guard plate 14 is preferably located over the spikes that is strong enough to prevent a person, animal etc. from impaling themselves on the spikes but which is weak enough to deform at a relatively low level vehicle impact. The plate may be provided with regions of weakness to aid the deformation and the plate may be welded to the barrier. The plate may also include at least one aperture 62 which is disposed so as to provide a route for the spike(s) to extend through as the guard is deformed. The barrier is preferably pivoted at a point located inwards from one end and has weights attached to facilitate its lifting. A support is preferably provided which acts to support the free end of the barrier when it is in the lowered position and a locking mechanism may be included that can secure the barrier in one or more orientations.
