Tracking means of the residual-thickness determination unit (7) are impinged by output signals corresponding to the position of the or each contact wire (4). The tracking means allow an image recording field (8) of the residual-thickness determination unit (7) to track the current position of the or each contact wire (4), in such a way that the width of a worn surface, caused by erosion on the underside of the or each contact wire (4) and the residual thickness resulting therefrom can be determined, the geometry of each contact wire being known.
